The Ecosystem
Chelo is open to everyone from around the world who wants to have a hand in creating positive change. The Ecosystem created by Chelo promotes progress and continuity for all educational institutes, being especially beneficial for schools in disadvantaged communities.
It advocates for togetherness/Ubuntu. The concept that working together we can do more, is one of the key drivers. Additionally, through the security and report system of the platform, everyone is left content that their contribution will achieve the goal as intended.
Our Mission
Our mission is to create a bridge between Alumni/Sponsors and Educational Institutes (Schools and Education related Programs). We believe that Education is crucial for the development of communities, especially in relation to youth. We aim to optimize this progression by creating and sustaining a more fruitful learning environment.
The lack of quality education holds back a lot of potential and that should no longer be the case. We want people involved in running schools to identify their biggest challenges and share those with the community of dedicated individuals on Chelo who can then take the necessary steps to assist them.
Our Vision
Our vision is to be the pillar for communities through education across all backgrounds. To see communities build each other and create better opportunities for those that follow.
The Objectives
- Assist Schools to create and share projects.
- Simplify fundraising of school projects.
- Improve transparency & accountibility through project progress reporting.
- Provide donors with secure platform to support schools.
- Ensure that schools from all spheres have an online presence.
The Story about Chelo
Chelo was initially conceptualized in 2017 as a subsidiary of Planet Eye (Pty) Ltd. An education enabler tool with a digital payment and reporting system that allows communities to work together in improving, advancing and fostering continuity within the educational sector.
The platform was inspired by a time that I went to my former high school. One of the teachers together with the students were on a fundraising mission for a school pavement project. I’m not sure if I actually made a donation that day, but I remember thinking that there was no other way that I would have known about the initiative other than being physically present. On another note, when I am home and see all the schools from my youth, they always seem to either be deteriorating with time or improving at an unsatisfactory stagnant rate.
That is always a worrying sight, given the importance of education and the environment in which it is to be cultivated. On the flip side, I know a lot of people from my school who, given the opportunity, would help in a heartbeat. As a matter of fact, a lot of people are willing to contribute towards helping the communities that raised them, but find that there aren’t convenient channels to do so.
The above combined gave birth to Chelo. The name Chelo is derived from a word Tšhela/Chela, meaning "to pour". Used in a Sepedi/Pedi sentence: Tšhela ka mo sekhwameng to help the school. Translates to: Pour into the fund to help the school. The idea of the name is that all the enthusiasts can pour their contributions towards achieving the goal.
